The hundred acres or so that comprise his scenic course stretch across miles of pristine beachfront, oak hammock forests, lakes and marshes. The palette Tom works with is the land itself, and the environment at Hammock Dunes made the work as easy as it gets: in some areas the course has the open feel of a Scottish links, in others the rolling hills of the heartland; some holes boast the lush verdure of the Carolinas, others the tropical flavor of Florida.
The environment always plays a major part in designing a course. According to Tom, "...at Hammock Dunes, the course seems not so much to intrude upon nature as to complement it; the way the design fits into the surrounding terrain is virtually seamless. In fact some of the great joys of playing Hammock Dunes is the chance to glimpse wildlife in its natural habitat. From egrets and cranes to otters and deer, its eighteen holes are home to a variety of animals and birds, as well as a select group of homeowners."
"Actually choosing a favorite hole becomes a pleasurable dilemma - something akin to choosing a favorite color or song. The wind along the course becomes a factor here as well. You can’t touch the wind or see it, and yet it allows each hole to be played differently with every round. Each and every hole on the course has become my favorite at some time or another, but I am constantly challenged and humbled by the 18th hole. After hitting the ball to the green the spectacular view of the sea reminds me of why I chose this profession; the game and its challenges are their own reward."
