Another element instrumental to the proper creation of any course is its setting. That is why Rees is so pleased with this location just west of the Hammock Dunes community.
"The selection of a site for the course is crucial. It serves as the canvas for the creation of the design."
Given the wooded surroundings along with marsh and creek vistas, Rees certainly has a worthy backdrop to display his well-honed talent - skills he uses, time and time again, to design timeless works of art.
"The ultimate measure of success is building uncontrived courses that have enough variety and character to retain the golfer's interest round after round. I strive to build my courses to stand the test of time."
A few interesting Creek Course facts:
Average Green Size - 5,735 sq. ft. Tifeagle Bermudagrass.
53 Sand Bunkers.
Timber Bridges - 13 timber bridges (12' wide) totally over 3,100 lf.
Lakes - 10 lakes constructed totalling 40-acres.
Holes with water in play - #1, #2, #10, #11, #13 and #14.
Marsh Holes - #13, #14 and #15.
Course architect, Rees Jones, views his newest design, Hammock Dunes' Creek Course, as a true classic that offers players an enjoyable test in a pure, picturesque setting.
Jones’ 7,355-yard, par 72 Creek Course, which traverses more than 690 acres debuted January 9 at a festive grand opening replete with everything from a red carpet path, to ice sculptures, to a six piece band and rave reviews.
"We are extremely pleased that Rees Jones designed such an exceptional golf course for us, and we are thrilled it is an all-green course," said Terry Pendleton of HD Associates, the developer group for Hammock Dunes. "Having no homes on the site further elevates the golfer’s total experience."
With an unspoiled backdrop of marsh and creek views, native oaks and palms, the Creek Course layout features 450 acres of conservation area that will be left undisturbed.
Included with the course, which features five sets of artfully placed tees to accommodate all levels of golfers are a 5,800-square foot, lowland style clubhouse with a dining area, full kitchen, bar and screened porch; a pro shop; and a cart facility.
Hammock Dunes Creek Course
Retains Its Designation for Environmental Excellence
Hammock Dunes Club - Creek Course has retained its designation as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" by Audubon International.
To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Quality Management.
Hammock Dunes Club - Creek Course is one of 80 courses in Florida and 637 courses in the world to receive the honor.
Co-President of the Flagler Audubon Society was given a tour of the course and sent her observations to Audubon International. "Not only was the whole course full of wildlife and good practice for wildlife conservation," says Davies. "But it was very clear that the leadership of both the membership and the golf course superintendent saw the full benefit of the programs and saw it as their job to perpetuate the ACSP."
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf
Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife
habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Canada, and Europe have
also achieved certification in the program. Hammock Dunes - Hammock Dunes Links Course was a certified course in 2001.
