Home Run for Hospice Charity Golf Tournament at the Creek Course

Considering the challenge of the humanitarian work being done by The Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House on a daily basis, a little rain, a little thunder, a little lightning wouldn't dare to be a problem. Well being summertime in Florida, the rain and thunder tried to be a small problem in the afternoon as the 18-hole event held at the Hammock Dunes Creek Course, had to be cut short. After three hours of play, the 112 golfers who teed it up for the 12-noon shotgun start were called off the course, waited 30 minutes and then got back out to continue only to have the elements later call a final halt to their golfing efforts. Even with some weather, spirits were clearly not dampened and everyone had a good time.

Up to that final call, the Fifth Annual Tournament conducted for the benefit of the recently dedicated Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House located at the Flagler Florida Hospital was right on par. The volunteer staff, Tournament Coordinator, Lynn Miles, Co-Chairs Sterling Colee and Vicki Dillard and great Committee Members, had efficiently ushered the players through registration, lunch, goodie bag handouts, and access to the silent auction that contained a marvelous selection of sponsor contributed golfing gems. Head Professional, Ron Sharpe, and his staff had the course ready in its usual excellent shape and the cart attendants had the carts fully bagged and good to go. (My volunteer job was to monitor the 16th hole for an ace, but my treat was to share that job with Cathie Huff who is one of many regular volunteers at the Hospice House and who are the real heroes/heroines of this event.)

Many of the players were playing the Creek Course for the first time and even though their day was cut short, they still marveled at the beauty, the solitude, and the challenge that is the Rees Jones' masterpiece. The Course recently received its two-year re-certification from Audubon International as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" for environmental excellence. The course is one of 80 courses in Florida and 637 in the world to receive the honor. Congratulations, Creek Course!

Even though the golfing play was cut short, the array of heavy hors d'oeuvres was on schedule, plus the issuance of door prizes and the tournament prize awards. There were three team net prizes based on 9 holes of golf (Event monogrammed glassware) for the shamble format (select the best drive and then all play own ball into the hole) and finishing first with a low, low score of minus 23 were David Taylor, Steve Runkell, Steve Bennett, and John Boback. Two teams tied for second place with minus 20's so on to the number one handicap hole to match cards. Paul and Linda Steggerda, Ronald Gibbons, and Elsa Gibbons eagled the hole to finish second while Dave Franklin, Richard Taylor, Jim Gonce, and Bob Witty gave it their all with a par, but had to settle for third. The closest to the pin winners were Sally Stockman for the ladies on hole number 2 and Rick McArdle for the men on hole number 16.

Not a winner this year for the Hole-In-One 2-year lease on a Mercedes SL500 Roadster, a Scottish Holiday for two, a Bahamas Cruise for two, or the $10,000 cash so that will have to wait until next year.

It was a terrific event raising a net of over $40,000. No matter what the golfing scores were and the weather, it was a great tribute to the memory of the late Hammock Dunes Resident and Cardinal's CEO Stuart F. Meyer who started the dream of a Flagler County Hospice House. The Fifth Annual Event was deemed a Home Run for Hospice! Looking forward to the 6th.

Hammock Dunes Brings Out Best in Low Amateur at U.S. Open

University of Florida Senior-to-be Matt Every had a new fan club rooting him on at the 105th U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June, the members at Hammock Dunes. Every, who hails from Ormond Beach, began his incredible run to the Open by finishing second in the Local Qualifier at the Creek Course at Hammock Dunes. It ended with Every winning the gold medal as low amateur, finishing in a tie for 28th, ahead of Cinderella-story Jason Gore, and second among all local qualifiers in the field. Every's final-round 70 was bested only by eventual champion Michael Campbell, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Stewart Cink. The former walk-on who is now a two-time first-team All-American says he'll return for his senior season under Buddy Alexander in Gainesville.

It was Hammock Dunes' first year hosting an Open qualifier and Director of Golf Ron Sharpe says all signs point to another opportunity soon. Sharpe reports that the tourney director from the Florida State Golf Association and the USGA, Les Brown, called the Creek Course one of the five best in all of Florida and raved that the Hammock Dunes club members who volunteered as spotters and scorers were the most friendly and knowledgeable of any he'd worked with and that the gallery was the largest he'd ever seen at a local qualifier.

Sean Gorgone was the only player under-par in the 18-hole qualifier, firing a 71 over the 7,075 Creek Course layout designed by Rees Jones. Every tied with Jacksonville's Mike Blackburn for second at one-over-par 73, advancing to the sectional, where he survived a 9-man playoff for 5 spots in the Open.

One island or two. One course or two. Choices abound at Hammock Dunes, a private golf community in Palm Coast.

Hammock Dunes is an anomaly. A combination of all the best of waterfront and golf lifestyles created part by design and part by nature. The main clubhouse and a portion of Hammock Dunes is on a barrier island with a 1.5 mile stretch of beach and a highly acclaimed Tom Fazio-designed golf course featuring four holes that play to or from the Atlantic Ocean.

"A c t u a l l y choosing a favorite hole becomes a p l e a s u r a b l e dilemma—something akin to choosing a favorite color or song," Fazio said about the course that is set next to the ocean. "You can't touch the wind or see it, and yet it allows each hole to be played differently with every round." Yet he singles out the 18th because of the view of the ocean as the round concludes. Fazio, as most know, was chosen to evaluate and suggest changes made at Augusta National to "Tigerproof" or "Technologyproof" the course.

Unique among golf communities are the gated access Island Estates at Hammock Dunes. They are located on an island in the Intracoastal waterway, which offers views to the east and to the west. The westernmost side is the Intracoastal channel, and the island is accessible only by bridges that connect it to Hammock Dunes. The island itself is 2.5 miles long, a crescent of luxurious living, peacefully set at water's edge.

With nearly 1,000 acres of spacious living and recreation, there was certainly enough room for a second golf course, created by the "U.S. Open Doctor" Rees Jones. In the last decade, Jones has often been called on to modify courses to make them long enough for U.S. Open play given the length that golfers are able to hit the golf ball.

Located across the Intracoastal, Hammock Dunes Creek Course features marsh and stream vistas. The course has been named a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" by the Audubon International.

"The ultimate measure of success is building uncontrived courses that have enough variety and character to retain the golfer's interest round after round," Jones said about the Creek Course.

After a round of golf, members can enjoy a meal or just relax in the clubhouse which features extraordinary views of the Atlantic Ocean. It's the perfect way to end a day in paradise.
