Hammock Dunes Honored by the Audubon International
Hammock Dunes is flying high with its most recent award: Hammock Dunes
Club's designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
Qualifications to achieve certification are so stringent that less than two
percent of golf courses receive this noteworthy designation. To be
certified, a course must meet a high standard for environmental planning,
wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, integrated pest
management, water conservation and water quality management.
During nesting, female turtles crawl up the beach to a point well
above the high tide line where, using her rear flippers, she digs a chamber
and deposits about 100 eggs, and then gently covers the eggs with sand
before returning to the water. |
As chairman of the Audubon Project at Hammock Dunes, Dr. Robert Haley
believes the most important aspect of the communityıs new title is the
commitment it represents.
³Hammock Dunes has been blessed with a rich environment of stunning beauty,²
said Haley, who has been recognized by Audubon International for
Environmental Stewardship. ³As residents, we are determined to maintain and
improve upon natureıs grand gifts.²
These gifts include a large variety of wildlife that call Hammock Dunes
home. Deer and birds of all kinds, including snowy egrets, brown pelicans
and great horned owls, thrive in this inviting locale and helped the
community attain the Audubon status it now enjoys.
With all the discoveries to be made here, itıs no wonder everyone works so
hard to keep Mother Nature one of Hammock Dunesı most cherished residents
for years to come.
